New Display at Brownville Schoolhouse Art Gallery

New Display at Brownville Schoolhouse Art Gallery
THE NEW DISPLAY at Brownville’s Schoolhouse Art Gallery features pieces of clay and painted art by, from left, Jill Lokke, Dale Dickkut, Kinsley and Kennedy Schardt. Katy Haberman, on the far right, led the class in which these pieces were created.

On July 15, Katy Haberman, an accomplished sculptor and painter, taught a sculpting class to four local artists. The results of that class were clay masks called ‘Green Men,’ figures from European mythology that were hung on trees by their makers. Those clay masks were then fired in a kiln and, on Sunday, August 10, those finished pieces were put on display at the Schoolhouse Art Gallery.

“My teacher told me that if you are making money from your art, which is most artists dream, you have an obligation to teach what you know for free.” Haberman explained this to those present to view the new display, and added that she is filled with joy watching students create works they are proud of. As well as the ‘Green Men’ masks, those attending the class in June were able to do flower prints with paints with the extra day they weren’t sculpting. Those prints, too, were hung on display over the clay works.

“There were, as there always are, some breakage in the firing process,” Haberman noted, “But nothing is truly perfect, and the cracks are how light can shine through.” Those broken pieces were glued back together for the display. Following an address to the attendees, Haberman was presented with a bouquet and thanked for her dedication to teaching and generosity.
