Since 2008, Gilbert Services has performed tire and oil changes, brake and suspension work and a number of other minor mechanical jobs from their garage at the corner of 10th and J Streets. Mike and Marilyn Gilbert explained that, for about ten years, they’ve needed more space. Four years ago, they began looking for that space, and November 1 of 2024 they purchased the property where Mellage Truck and Tractor had once operated from on 10th Street.

Near the middle of November, they got to work clearing dirt and a tree, and began pouring concrete. “It’s a big investment and we want to have it in operation as soon as possible,” Marilyn said, and the Gilberts expect to have the shop in working order by February 1 of 2025. In order to achieve that goal, they need to finish roofing and insulating the building as well as adding electrical and plumbing utilities. An 18,000 pound lift will also be included in that work. From there, they don’t plan to move, but to expand, and explained that the original location will be used more for scheduling and paperwork, while the new location will mainly be used for auto work.

The Gilberts also own the lot where Tincher’s Auto used to be, and had considered expanding to that location, but decided that the former site of Mellage Truck and Tractor would be both more convenient and easier to work on. “They’re actually the same amount of space,” Mike explained, “It’s just the way they lay that is different, and makes this new lot look a lot bigger.”Gilbert Services’ new location will provide all the same work and services that the original shop has done since 2008. “We’re keeping our options open about offering any other services,” Mike said, “Mostly, we’re excited to not have to do oil changes outside anymore.”
