Three fire departments responded to a call a half-mile north of the Julian corner on Thursday, April 4 in the mid-afternoon. At the end of the farmhouse driveway, piles of round haybales burned dangerously close to the highway.
Auburn, Nebraska City and the Julian/Brock fire departments were present in the effort to control the fire. While most of the firefighters worked to control the blaze with hoses, others directed traffic with a slow/stop sign and a tractor drug burning hay clear from the bales that were unburned. It is unclear what started the fire.
