On January 11, 2023, N22859a Cessna 150H airplane crashed approximately 1.25 miles south of the Auburn Airport. Flight instructor Colton Hill, 24, and student pilot Dustan Biegler, 41, were both killed in the crash. An investigation was conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and on September 5, 2024, the findings of said investigation were published in a final report.
“In the report it is stated that an examination of the airplane and engine revealed no evidence of a mechanical failure or malfunction that would have precluded normal operation. The carburetor heat control was in the full forward (off) position. The weather conditions around the time of the accident were conducive to the development of serious carburetor icing. The airplane’s impact attitude was consistent with a loss of control.
“The airplane departed Lincoln Airport (LNK), Lincoln, Nebraska, about 1845 (6:45p.m.). About 6 miles northwest of Farington Field Airport (K01), the airplane began a descent and the last information captured at 1922 showed the airplane about 1.1 miles west of K01 at 105 knots groundspeed. The airplane impacted a field without crops while on a southeasterly heading.
