Auburn 5th Grader Cynzie Schmidt was among 30 6th graders selected to play in the 24th Annual Blair Freeman All-Star Basketball Game held at Bellevue East High on Tuesday, March 18. Following a Bulldog club victory over the Omaha Aces, a team that had gone undefeated until that game, a league director approached Cynzie and her family and asked if she would be interested in playing in the All-Star game. Being a 5th grader selected for the 6th grade team is a rare occurrence, but for Cynzie, who has played up in age most of her life, it was nothing so new.
Schmidt was one of 30 selected from a pool of 130 other girls who participated in tournaments around Nebraska. 15 girls made up each of the two teams and Cynzie played point guard during the All-Star Game, recording three assists throughout the game which Cynzie’s team ended up winning. “Cynzie works really hard and it pays off,” said her mother, Lynsey, “She was so excited, we were all really excited and proud of her accomplishment.”
