Lack of snow and rainfall in the Southeast Nebraska area has raised concerns about drought conditions. The Auburn Board of Public Works follows drought management protocol in order to be eligible for federal funds if such a need would arise. While the area is not in a dire emergency situation, a drop in rainfall of 19% over the last four years has triggered action points. Total rainfall for 2023 amounted to 26.81 inches. 2024 recorded rainfall as of April 5th is 3.16”. Groundwater levels have fallen five feet below normal season levels. Therefore, BPW is taking steps to implement Stage 1 of the Emergency Contingency Plan. By providing awareness of short-term concerns, we can take this opportunity to begin volunteer mindfulness of water usage.
Efficient use of our resources will aid in maintaining our resources until the water levels are restored naturally. BPW will do their part by continuing to expediate repairs on any water main lines that are leaking. BPW employees are vigilant in looking for leaks by watching for water running in the street, or water laden areas of soil; we also encourage residents to report suspicious water leaks to the Board. In addition, hydrant flushing, and other water work that can be delayed will not be scheduled until it is feasible to take care of these items.
How can our local communities help? It is easy to underestimate the amount of water a household uses. At a time of year when we are excited about lush lawns and landscaping projects, we can be mindful of not letting sprinklers run excessively. We can make efficient use of indoor water by washing full loads of laundry, taking shorter showers, and by fixing leaky toilets and faucets. In addition, water usage for agriculture should be monitored so that the minimal amount of water needed for production is used.
