After many months of securing approvals from various entities, Steve Woerth and George Neubert were able to wrap up the Whiskey Run Creek Nature Trail art installation. The Art and Nature project includes 10 sculptures placed along the Whiskey Run Creek Nature Trail, the 10th of which was set in place on the island in the center of the Highway 136 and South 1st Street intersection.
The Whiskey Run Creek Nature Trail begins at Brownville’s Whiskey Run Creek Winery and Distillery, passes by the Schoolhouse Art Gallery and Brownville Village Theatre, and connects to the Steamboat Trace Trail which runs along the Missouri River. Scattered along this nature trail, you can find the 10 unique sculptures. Donated to the Flatwater Art Foundation by nine different artists, each of the sculptures brings a wonderfully abstract addition to its part of the trail.
‘Spring It, No 139’ is the name of the final sculpture added to the trail. The sculpture was created by internationally acclaimed sculptor Fletcher Benton, created from patinated sandblasted steel in 2013. “Fletcher was really well known for his kinetic sculptures,” explained George Neubert, the director of the Flatwater Folk Art Museum in Brownville, “But he was tired of having to go around and fix all of his moving sculptures, so he took a new approach. Instead of kinetic works, he started making static pieces that portrayed motion.”
