April 21 through April 27 is National Volunteer Week, and though volunteers don’t provide their services for fame or fortune, each and every one of them is a hero for giving their time for those less able. From those who pick up trash in the parks to the firefighters rescuing people and pets from burning buildings, volunteers make the world a better place out of the goodness of their hearts, and they should all be praised for their deeds.
Another of Auburn’s wonderful volunteer services is the Meals on Wheels program. Based out of the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels delivers fresh-cooked lunches to those who can’t make it down to the Senior Center themselves. While it isn’t a necessarily difficult task, the volunteers working for the program dedicate an amount of their time every day to get this people food, and that is commendable in and of itself.
The program is a non-profit that relies on city funds as well as support from Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging. Maria Hudson, the event coordinator and director of the Senior Center, noted the Meals on Wheels program delivers around 40 meals per day to people in the Auburn area. These lunches are cooked by Jessica Smith, who has been the Senior Center cook for two years now. Those piping hot dishes are then driven out around Auburn by the volunteers.
