The Bulldog soccer team captured their first varsity win of the season against the Pioneers of Nebraska City in a shootout.
Senior Sydney Binder dribbled the ball up the right side of the field in the 5th minute to set up the first goal of the game. A penalty on the Pioneers set up a free kick from 30 yards out. Auburn’s leading scorer, Lucia Campbell, sent the free kick above the Pioneer goal keeper’s head into the far corner of the net to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the first half.
Nebraska City would tie the game in the 17th minute after a Pioneer player pushed the ball nearly the entire length of the field. A defensive slip up by the Bulldogs on the cross led to an open short range shot, which Nebraska City put in the goal to make it 1-1. Neither team could produce another score through the second half and overtime. Auburn defeated Nebraska City in the shootout to seal their first official regular season victory. On Thursday, April 18 the Bulldogs fell to Plattsmouth on the road by a score of 10-0 to finish the week 1-1. Auburn improves to 1-8 on the season following their games against Nebraska City and Plattsmouth.
