Excerpt From 1876 Robert Furnas Speech Presented at Brownville Patriotic Program

The conclusion of a speech presented by Robert Furnas in 1876 was recalled Thursday morning, July 4, at Boettner Park in Brownville.

Mark Kramer of Lawrence, Kan. portrayed Nebraska’s second elected governor during the Freedom Day Patriotic Program. He noted the 20-year history of Nemaha County was written for President Grant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1876. The discourse was published July 18, 1876 in the Nebraska Advertiser.

Kramer noted Furnas asked what has and what may be accomplished, and can area residents do better and accomplish more in the future. He also inquired “has any other political system done more or better for mankind? Popular government has been established. Dissension has been triumphed with no victor or vanquished.”
