“Availability Over Ability”; Dr. Jeffery Meade Retires from Auburn Family Health Center

On August 31, 2024, Dr. Jeffery Meade will retire from Auburn Family Health Center (AFHC). He does so after an even 34 years of practice, having started working at AFHC on September 1, 1990.

Dr. Meade grew up in Alliance, Nebraska, and chose Chadron State College to begin his higher education. After graduating with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Meade attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, and completed his residency through UNMC as well. During his time in residency, he moonlit in Auburn, helping Dr. Gary Ensz with emergency room work. The result of this was Dr. Ensz offering Dr. Meade a job immediately after he finished residency, with nothing but a handshake sealing the deal.

Dr. Meade joined on at AFHC and got engaged to his wife Shannon in the same year, and, as he put it, “It’s been a really great 34 years.” When asked about is favorite part of the job, Dr. Meade was quick to respond, saying that connecting and interacting with his patients has been incredible, and will certainly be the thing he misses the most in his retirement. On the flip side, Dr. Meade was not a huge fan of on-call work at the hospital, and that before physician’s assistants were hired, there would be some rather late nights and early mornings.
