On September 20, Auburn Head Football Coach Tony Janssen addressed his team in the North end zone of Memorial Field in Ashland, following their 41-13 loss to the Bluejays.
“We sat here after that game seven weeks ago and what we said was okay, take this as a challenge,” said Janssen, recalling his message to the team after their only loss of the season. “We want to see these guys again in the playoffs and we need to be 29 points better at that point.”
Seven weeks later, after the quarterfinal round of the 2024 NSAA Class C1 State Football Playoffs, the Bulldog football team celebrated in the same end zone, having improved by exactly 29 points to upset #2 Ashland-Greenwood by a score of 20-19 to move on the state semifinal.
