Helen Marie Moody, elder daughter of Ivan Edward Mastin and Helen Tritle Sellers Mastin, was born on March 11, 1922 at Auburn, Nebraska and passed away on August 8, 2024 at a local rest home in Auburn.
Helen grew up attending Auburn public schools, graduating from Auburn High School in 1942. Subsequently, she attended Peru State College where she earned a two-year teaching certificate. She then taught one year in western Nebraska before returning to the Auburn neighborhood, where she lived for the rest of her life.
From her earliest years, Helen attended the Auburn First Presbyterian Church. During high school, while singing in the choir there, she met Harold Edward Moody, who was to be her future husband. They were married in the church on October 23, 1943, and moved to family land three and a half miles north of Auburn where they farmed and raised three sons---Michael Edward born in 1944, Richard Earl in 1946 and Joseph Mastin in 1953. They remained on the farm until 1974, when they relocated to Auburn, where they resided at 1416 P Street. Following Harold’s passing in 2006, she continued to live there until she moved to Long’s Creek assisted living facility in 2013, where she remained until the last few weeks of her life.
In addition to raising her family and supporting her husband’s farming operation, Helen found time for the church and civic activities. She continued singing in the church choir and held several congregational leadership positions. She also belonged to several civic and social groups, including PEO, Eastern Star, and the Auburn Country Club.
In her spare time, Helen enjoyed reading, traveling, music, cards, and good conversation. Although the foundations of her life were family, faith and friends, she was also public spirited and always ready to provide assistance to any worthy cause. Personally, she was warm, loving and helpful to all.
Besides her husband Harold, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janet Irene Mastin Read and her granddaughter Kendall Sunneberg. Those left to mourn her passing include her sons Michael, Richard (Linda), and Joseph (Connie); her brother- in-law Bill Read; and her cousins Nancy and Nathan Woodhams. Grandchildren are Lisa (Mick) Hale, Brian (Sara) Moody, Jon Sunneberg (Kendall’s husband), Todd (Jaki) Moody and Eric (Morgan) Moody. Great grandchildren are Jordan (Danielle), Katie, and Elizabeth Hale; Trace, Kellen, and Burke Moody; Brandt, Blaike, and Britten Sunneberg; Harrison and Clara Moody; and Braxton and Clayton Moody. She also has two great-great grandchildren, Jay and Jude Hale, as well as many other relatives and friends.
