1920 - 2024

 

Helen (Stoddard) Mordhorst, age 104 passed away on early Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Helen Maude (Stoddard) Mordhorst was born at Auburn, NE to John William and Maud (Haynes) Stoddard on September 8, 1920. She grew up and attended school in Auburn, graduating with the Class of 1937, at the age of 16. Helen obtained her Teacher’s Certif-icate from Peru State College and then attended Dana College in Blair, NE, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She started teaching in 1940 at a country school south of Johnson. She taught at Johnson for three years and then moved to Omaha where Helen taught fourth grade in the Omaha Public School System for 36 years before retiring.

On August 24, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to Edwin Mordhorst in Omaha. They spent their working years in Omaha and upon retirement, they moved to Mt. Home, Arkansas for twelve years. In 1991, they moved to Nebraska City. They shared 56 years of marriage before Edwin was called home on November 2, 2005.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: William, Samuel and Harold Stoddard and sisters: Ethel Teten, Pearl Hayes, Hazel Stoddard and Irene Morrissey. Helen is survived by niece: Donna Versaw of Canon City, CO, great-nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

A Graveside Funeral Service was be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn, NE. a burial followed the service.

Visitation was held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday (10/27) at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City. A Prayer Service followed the visitation at 5:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Sheridan Cemetery or First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City.
