Jeanette Elaine Palmer, age 72 of Syracuse, formerly of Johnson, passed away November 5, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Syracuse.
Born November 26, 1951, the youngest child of Charles and Dorothy (Haase) Wiechert, Jeanette grew up on the family dairy farm. She attended elementary school in Emerald, Junior High at University High School, and graduated from Lincoln East High School in 1969. She attended the University of Nebraska gaining an undergraduate degree and then a teaching degree. She worked one year as a paraprofessional at Lincoln East Library before starting her teaching career at Tecumseh Public Schools, later Johnson County Central Public School. She retired in 2019, after over 42 years as an educator.
Jeanette married Duane Palmer on October 6, 1978. This union was blessed with two children, Garret and Shelby.
Jeanette was an avid reader, enjoyed attending all her grandsons’ activities, and she and Duane both enjoyed traveling to the wide-open places to enjoy God’s creations. She was an active member of the Johnson United Methodist Church as well as the local PEO Chapter. Her faith was strong and unwavering, and she was always thinking of others. In everything she did, her impact was memorable.
She is survived by her husband Duane; son Garret (Lisa) Palmer; daughter Shelby (Nate) Patton; grandsons Dexter and Isaac Patton; brothers Bob (Alice) Wiechert, Bill (Rose) Wiechert; sister Annette Wiechert; brotherin- law Gordon (Shari) Hopp; sister-in-law Donna Palmer; nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.
There will be a private family inurnment at Clifton Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 24, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Cook Community Building.

Herbert Wilson Barter was a retired Army Veteran who fought in three wars overseas: in France at the end of WWII; two tours in Korea; and two tours in Vietnam. Herb was born on June 3, 1926, in Whitefield, NH, the son of Herbert Wilson and Sadie A. (Smith) Barter. August 11, 1950, Herb married the love of his life, Nancy Ellen Hilton, at Nancy’s family home in Center Ossipee, NH. He and Nancy were blessed with two children, Dennis Herbert and Holly Jane. Herbert formerly lived in New Hampshire, Ohio and Massachusetts before moving to Nebraska in 2004. His civilian career included working for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company and he also had been a supervisor over a number of convenience stores in parts of Ohio and Kentucky. Throughout his life he was a loyal church member, loved old-time country music, loved square dancing, enjoyed working for Habitat for Humanity and loved people in general.
He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City, volunteered many hours at the local Friends of Faith Thrift Store and always looked forward to meeting up with his buddies at the wellness center three mornings a week to exercise and share stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; son, Dennis; daughter-inlaw, Susan; stepsister, two brothers, and a sister. Those left to celebrate his life include daughter, Holly Steffens and her husband Jim of Auburn; grandchildren, Christina Barter, Ryan Barter and his wife Sara, Kerri Tuttle and her husband Alex, Evi Wusk and her husband Ralph; great grandchildren, Elise Caroline Barter, Charli Jane Wusk, Oliver Everette Wusk, Ellie Lynn Tuttle, and Luke Alex Tuttle; brother, Richard Barter of Rio Rancho, NM; sisters-in-law, Gretel Hilton of Richardson, TX, Barbara Hilton of Dover, NH, Alice Hilton of Randolph, ME, Janet Hanscome of Elk Grove, CA, Joy Hutchins-Pelletier and her husband Rosaire of Plainfield, NH, Linda Smith and her husband Noel of Silver Lake, NH, Linda Fairchild of Effingham, NH; many other relatives and friends. Herbert died on November 5, 2024, at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City at the age of 98 years, 5 months, and 2 days.
Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 15, 2024 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City with burial to take place at a later date in New Hampshire.
Visitations will be 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska City Fire – EMS Division, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries – Camperhip Fund or Jackson Historical Society in Jackson, NH.
