WALTER WILLIAM LAMMLE 1926 - 2024

WALTER WILLIAM LAMMLE 1926 - 2024

Walter William Lammle died peacefully on November 10th, 2024, with his benevolent caretakers Dave, Lorie, Ashley and Brianna by his side after having reached the age of 98. Walter was born on October 11th, 1926, to William and Caroline Lammle in Roscoe, SD. He was the second oldest of four siblings. Walter completed high school in Roscoe, SD and went on to college at the School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, SD. After college Walter returned to Roscoe to help his father Bill with the family implement dealership. Walter proudly served his country in the US Navy for 2 years with honorable discharge in 1944. After returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Angeline Deutenhoeffer on December 19th, 1948.

Walter and Angie had six children, Lois, Guy, David, Dru, Michal and Timothy. After marriage Walter’s primary vocation was US rural mail carrier in Roscoe. In 1963, courtesy of an option in the Post Office to trade routes with another willing Rural Mail Carrier, they all moved to Peru, Nebraska. Peru had a State College making it possible for the children to attend college after high school Walter served a total of 30 years as a Rural Mail Carrier for the US government. In addition to Walter’s daytime job, he had a night shift in a cabinet factory in Auburn in order to make ends meet. After retiring from the postal service in 1985 he became a licensed insurance agent for Lutheran Brotherhood.

Shortly after retiring Walter and Angie moved to sunny and warm Phoenix, AZ, where they were active in retirement with Walter still selling life insurance and enjoying church activities, golf and Phoenix Suns basketball. Walter and Angie were typical snowbirds and spent about half the year back in Lincoln, Nebraska. They resided in a home at the HiMark golf course that their sons opened in 1992.

After Angie passed in 2003, Walter then married Joyce Procras who also preceded him in death. Walter remained independent and active until his 95th birthday where a stroke and car accident in 2021 slowed him down considerably.

Over the past 3 years Walter has spent several short respite stays in 3 different assisted living facilities and visits to Michal and Dru’s homes. However, Dave and Lorie Lammle mercifully opened up their home and became his primary caretakers for the vast majority of time in these last three years Walter was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Caroline, his wife Angie, sisters Erma and Irene, brother Arnie and daughter Lois and son Timothy. Walter is survived by his children Guy (Rita), Dave (Lorie), Dru (Sonja) and Michal (Cory) Wilson; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Friday, November 15, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Auburn, officiated by Pastor Brent Berg. Sandy Wilson served as organist for congregational hymns. Casket bearers were Ashley Randall, Brianna Lammle, Dru Davis Lammle, Mark Lammle, Caleb Wilson, Josh Wilson, West Anderson, and Zach Prokop. Burial followed in Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru, with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and United States Navy Honor Guard.
